Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere delighted. - 02 July 2005 at 12:13

Aliadiere said: "I couldn't have spent another season at Arsenal not playing football. All I did was train on a Saturday morning and then watch my friends play in the afternoon.

"Arsene Wenger has assured me that if I have a good season at Celtic he will give me a game every week for Arsenal when my loan period is over."

Aliadiere knew his world had turned upside down when he arrived at Glasgow Airport on Thursday and received the kind of superstar welcome that accompanies Thierry Henry wherever he goes in London.

Outside Celtic Park yesterday, the first child wearing the club's new shirt with Aliadiere on the back could be spotted in the crowd of sightseers and well-wishers.

The Frenchman said: "I love it. I didn't know all about the intensity of the support for the club before I got here but I'm aware of it now.

"I like people coming up to me and shaking my hand and I got a tremendous surprise at the airport when I arrived form London and was mobbed by the media.

"This is the most excited I have ever felt about the beginning of a new season.

"I know if I have a great time here then I have a chance of making the French squad for the World Cup finals in Germany next year.

"But that dream of playing for my country on the biggest stage of all would have died if I had stayed at Arsenal without being able to get a regular game."
